The Kokkonutcase

The goal of this wiki is to make the process of joining and functioning as a Kokkonut as smooth as possible. The early sections should help with big things like how to register as a german resident, how to receive your salary and generally how to grapple with the monolith that is german bureaucracy.

Once you’ve got your life sorted, you’ll probably start wondering how to get your computer running all the appropriate programs, some of which require JGU supplied licenses. You might also enjoy running ambitious simulations. Rather than waiting weeks for your local machine, JGU has a local high-performance computing cluster, called MOGON (weird name, right? see here). Don’t fret, we’ve got a whole section dedicated to these challenges.

If you’re a postdoc, then your job might involve some teaching. Currently, the lab is heavily involved with teaching three different courses; a bachelor subject run entirely by the postdocs and two courses in the Masters for Evolutionary Biology, headed by Hanna. Prior resources – lectures, workshops etc. – can be found in the teaching section.

A big part of lab life is the Bachelor thesis. JGU students complete this as a capstone of their undergrad studies, so we tend to have a couple in the group at any one time. These typically take four months and culminate in a manuscript-style written document. The online documentation for this is suboptimal, so we’ve written our own here.

We would also like the repository associated with this wiki to function as a code repository. This means that for projects both published and unpublished, well-documented code is readily accessible. A neccessary part of this accessibility is having a good readme file, for which we provide instructions.

Finally, Shikhara (and eventually others) has supplied some generally useful technical knowledge. Things like an introduction to game theory are included. I suspect these are the very beginnings of Shikhara’s inevitable evo-eco theory textbook, and you get a sneak peek!
