Grants

Some particular grants for very early post-docs that Shikhara finds enticing. Many of the Institutes for Advanced Study (think Princeton’s IAS and all the EU copycats, e.g. the IAS in Tolouse or WiKo in Berlin) also offer independent fellowships that I do not list.

  • The Walter Benjamin Grant and Fellowship from the DFG. Note that the stuff you are allowed to apply for depends on whether you finished the majority of your high school etc education in Germany. Mostly for research within Germany.
  • The Marie Curie Fellowships for post-docs in the EU.
  • The JSPS fellowships for post-docs in Japan. At most 2 years.
  • The ICTS post-doctoral fellowships for 2 year post-docs in Bangalore, India. The vibe of the institute is like the SFI in the US: Most of the crowd is maths and physics but there are also some theoretical biologists (and even one theoretical ecologist).
  • The EMBO fellowships for 2 year post-docs within the EU.
  • The Initiate Grants for post-docs in Australia. This is meant to replace/refine what used to be the ‘Discovery early career researcher’ (‘DECRA’) grant. However, the information available online is currently (Sep 2026) incredibly vague.
  • The WIKO fellowships for very short-term post-docs in Berlin.
  • The Santa Fe Institute fellowships to do interdisciplinary work in Santa Fe in the US.
